I am trying to find a good used car, but I don't know much about cars. I found cars with 4.3L engines and 3.8 engines but I don't know what that means really.

A 3.1L engine means the engine size is 3.1 liters,or 3100 cc's. This is the combined volume of all the cylinders in the engine. The higher the number,the larger the engine. A large 4 cylinder would be a 2.5L. A large 6 cylinder would be about 4.0L. These are very generalized references,but this will get you up to speed. Remember that the larger the engine,generally the higher the power level.

In the simplest terms they're referring to the size of the engine displacement in Liters. Basically what is the interior volume of the engine.

4.3L = 4.3 Liters

3.8L = 3.8 Liters... etc...

The engine size/type can mean a whole lot in terms of how the car drives. In simple terms though ( for someone who admits to not knowing much ) just understand that generally speaking the bigger the engine the more power it has, and the more gas it uses.

It refers to the "cubic inch displacement" If I remember correctly, a 4.3 is a 307 engine. A 5.0 was a 350 block and so forth
